Load balancing Novarad NovaPACS
Benefits of load balancing Novarad NovaPACS
Load balancing medical imaging systems like Novarad NovaPACS ensures the system can reliably handle large volumes of data and maintain continuous service for patient care:
- High Availability (HA): Load balancing is crucial for achieving high availability, which is essential in a 24/7 patient care environment. A load balancer constantly monitors the “health” of all application or archive servers in the NovaPACS system. If one server fails or needs maintenance, the load balancer automatically and instantly redirects all incoming DICOM traffic (studies, image retrieval requests) to the remaining healthy servers. This eliminates single points of failure, minimizes disruptions, and ensures continuous, uninterrupted access to critical diagnostic images for radiologists and clinicians.
- Enhanced performance and faster workflows: Medical imaging files (CT, MRI, 3D mammography) are very large and can easily overwhelm a single server, creating bottlenecks. The load balancer distributes the processing workload across multiple servers. It can intelligently route new requests to the server that is least busy or has the most available resources. This prevents server overload, ensures rapid processing and retrieval of large imaging studies, and leads to faster response times for clinicians, which directly reduces turnaround times for patient reports.
- Scalability for growth: Healthcare organizations constantly face growing data volumes and user demands. Load balancing provides the flexibility to handle unexpected or continuous growth in imaging volume. As your organization grows (e.g., adds new high-volume modalities or acquires new facilities), you can easily add new servers to the NovaPACS cluster. The load balancer automatically incorporates these new resources into its distribution pool, allowing the system to scale its capacity without taking the system offline or degrading performance.

How to load balance Novarad NovaPACS
A typical deployment combines fast, highly available storage with unrestricted retrieval of images using our ultra-fast Layer 4 Direct Routing DR Mode, sometimes referred to as Direct Server Return (DSR). This is a very high-performance solution that requires little change to your existing infrastructure.
It is also possible to load balance a NovaPACS server deployment using Layer 7 Reverse Proxy. This mode might be preferable if making changes to the real servers is not possible. Due to the increased amount of information at Layer 7, performance is not as fast as at Layer 4.
